| Baker Island is
an uninhabited atoll set just north of the equator in using the
central Pacific Ocean at 0°13'N 176°31'W, around 3,100 km
(1,675 nautical miles) southwest of Honolulu. For instance grouped
together as section of the United States Minor Outlying Islands,
it is almost one-half of the way from Hawaii to Australia.
Baker Island National Wildlife Refuge consists of the 405 acre
(1.64 km²) island & a surrounding 30,504 acres (123.45
km²) of submerged land. The island is now a National
Wildlife Refuge managed by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service
as an insular region under the U.S. Department of the Interior.
Baker Island is an unincorporated and
unorganized province of the U.S.
Its defense is the obligation of the United States though uninhabited,
it is visited each year by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
