Bermuda was first colonised in 1609 by shipwrecked English colonists led for Virginia. Tourism to the island to escape North American winters 1st developed in Victorian times. Touristry continues to be important to the island's economy, although international business has overtaken it in late years. Bermuda has evolved into a highly successful offshore financial center.

Bermuda's culture is powerfully influenced by the British settlers who came to the island and the Americans who are the closest nation geographically. When several traditions & customs of the island are mostly British, the influence of the U.S. is undeniable.
