The tropical rain forest* of the Democratic
Republic of the Congo contain awesome biodiversity, admitting many
rare & endemic species, letting in each species of chimpanzee:
the Common chimpanzee and the bonobo (also known as the Pygmy chimp),
mount gorilla, okapi & white rhino.
5 of the country's national parks are listed as World Heritage Sites:
the Garumba, Kahuzi-Biega, Salonga & Virunga interior Parks,
and the Okapi Wildlife Reserve. The civil war and resultant poor
economic conditions have endangered much of this biodiversity. many
park wardens were either killed or could not afford to continue
their work. All 5 sites are named by UNESCO since World Heritage
In Danger.
Congo is the single nation in the world in
which Pygmy chimpanzees are discovered in the natural state
This combination has caused not single far flung endangerment of
local fauna, but has forced humans to trudge deeper into the wilderness
in seek of the desired animal meat. That overhunting results in
the dyings of more animals & makes resources even more scarce
for humans.
The hunting has also been facilitated by the extended logging prevailing
throughout the Congo's rainforests (given by corporate logging,
in addition to farmers clearing out forest in order to create areas
for agriculture), that reserves hunters much easier access to previously
unreachable jungle terrain, while simultaneously eroding out at
the habitats of animals
