The population is divided into two primary groups,
the Issa, or Somali people, who
make up about 60%, and the Afar, about 35%. The remainder is defined
by Europeans (mostly French and Italians), Arabs and Ethiopians.
The presence of two different population groupings was the reason
of the civil war in the early on 1990s.
The Somali ethnic element in Djibouti
is mainly compiled of the Issas, who form the majority & rule
the nation, & the Gadabuursi and Isaaq, all of whom are closely
associated as Dir subclans. The Issas pattern part of the Madoobe
Dir, whilst the Gadabuursi and Isaaq are part of the Mahe Dir, Mohammed
Hiniftire. Other Somalis in Djibouti admit Issas from the Ethiopian
Somali Area & from northern Somalia.
The bulk of Dijibouti's people are urban
residents the rest are herders. Health, sanitary, & educational
activity services are relatively poor in two urban and rural regions.
